The 1960’s and 70’s horror soap opera

Dark Shadows, Volume 5, Disc 2 - Episode 10

As the family mourns Jerimiah, Joshua learns that Barnabas plans to marry house maid Angelique.  He offers to buy her off, but she refuses.

Barnabas sees Josette at Jerimiah’s grave. He takes full blame for his death, and they have a nice chat. On a roll, he attempts to tell her about Angelique, but she keeps shushing him.

Angelique agrees to honor the mourning period before marrying Barnabas, using her time to begin a campaign to drive Josette mad. Her first act is to raise the corpse of Jerimiah right in front of Josette. Drastic, but effective.

Dark Shadows, Volume 5, Disc 2 - Episode 9

Barnabas reluctantly agrees to honor his promise to marry Angelique, although he reminds her that he still loves Josette. She is elated to have won her prize in spite of this.

Just to be sure that her rival gets no ideas, she convinces Josette that Barnabas hates her. Josette grows despondent. Later, she is awakened by the newly minted ghost of Jerimiah.

Ain’t no one happy ‘cept Angelique.

Dark Shadows: Volume 5, Disc 2 - Episode 8

Angelique sticks pins into Sarah’s doll in an attempt to make the 11 year old deathly ill. Barnabas and Naomi are moved by Sarah’s pleas to see Vicky, even though the child is a very bad actor and could well be faking it.  Nonetheless, the ensuing meeting convinces Naomi that Vicky is too nice to be a witch.

Ben suspects that Angelique is behind the illness and searches her room for evidence.  When she catches him, she admits to using Sarah as a pawn to win Barnabas.

Angelique tells Barnabas that she can cure Sarah with a cup of herbal tea if he promises to marry her. He agrees and she brews up a cup, but, more significantly, she removes the pins from the doll. This marks her most successful entrapment effort thus far!

Dark Shadows, Volume 5, Disc 2 - Episode 7

Angelique encourages Barnabas to believe that Vicky is a witch to take the heat off of herself.  Sensing that he is vulnerable, she proposes that they get back together. He accepts, coughing a bit. (A little dry on the set?)

Trask confronts Nathan, threatening him with scandal if he doesn’t divulge Vicky’s hiding place.

He then alarms Josette with the assertion that she is bewitched. He discovers the pitchfork mark on her hand and convinces her that she is not responsible for her actions. When likes the idea of being guiltless until he suggests “cleansing her body.”  Ick.

Barnabas happens upon the wretched scene and realizes that he still loves Josette.  He confesses this to Angelique and offers her friendship instead of marriage. She wigs out and decides to kill his little sister. An extreme reaction, but then she is evil.

Dark Shadows: Volume 5, Disc 2 - Episode 6

Not content with “proving” that Vicky is a witch, Trask insists that a coven of witches is involved. He is given license to run riot, interrogating family members and bursting into rooms.

Angelique spies Nathan stealing food for Vicky. Her smug look fades moments later under Trask’s ludicrous inquisition. When she denies having picnics (!) with the devil he is won over. She further curries favor with her “vision” of Nathan and Vicky consorting at Collinwood, the new family home now being completed.

Trask and Joshua catch Nathan at Collinwood. Vicky escapes through a window, leaving evidence of her presence. Close up of half eaten food, roll credits.

Dark Shadows: Volume 5, Disc 2 - Episode 5

The countess begins to regret her part in summoning Reverend Trask. She tells Barnabas and Nathan about Trask’s shenanigans. They immediately begin to search for Vicky.

Trask tells the countess that he has tied Vicky to a tree to see if it dies. That, he proclaims, will prove her guilt. Angelique overhears and realizes that she’s stumbled upon a great scapegoat in Vicky. She makes sure that the tree dies.

Barnabas and Nathan rescue Vicky and hide her for the night. A futile effort, considering that Trask finds the dead tree. He proclaims that Vicky is a witch. Thunderous  da da da dum music plays before the worried-sounding credits role.

Dark Shadows: Volume 5, Disc 2 -Episode 4

The Reverand Trask blows in, fresh from the school of outrageous overacting. He warms to the idea of interrogating Vicky. Nathan tries to warn her, but she naively believes that being innocent will count.

Trask bonds with the house fanatics, Abagail and the Countess.  Barnabas vigorously defends her, but he is outnumbered.

Trask accuses Vicky of witchcraft.   She denies it,  and slaps Trask, kicking his portrayal into high gear. He fiendishly waggles his eyebrows as he binds and gags her for a little trip to the woods. He claims that he will exorcise the evil spirits from her body. Sure, that’s the reason.

The following psycho sexual bondage scene ends with Vicky being tied to a tree in the middle of the woods. Trask believes that if the tree dies by morning she is a…WITCH.

Dark Shadows: Volume 5, Disc 2 - Episode 3

Josette begs her father to stop the duel between Barnabas and Jerimiah. Angelique overhears and rushes to stop Barnabas, who remains unmoved. She gives him a protective pendant,  a tad gaudy but full of protective juju.

Jerimiah and Barnabas chat. Recriminations and stilted dialogue ensue.

Angelique smears some witchy water onto Josette’s forehead prompting her to feel renewed love for Jerimiah. When Jerimiah is killed in the duel, she rants at Barnabas, proclaiming her love for her dead husband. Barnabas still loves Josette with all his heart. Chump.

Dark Shadows: Volume 5, Disc 2 - Episode 2

Bewitched by a spell, Josette and Jerimiah elope, behaving like soppy teenagers. Josette awakens from the spell, befuddling Jerimiah with her lack of interest in amore.

Back at Collinwood, Joshua is persuaded to send for a witch hunter to investigate Vicky. Barnabas tries fruitlessly to stop him.

Josette and Jerimiah return to Collinwood and announce their marriage with mixed results - all of them bad. Patriarch Joshua gets the whimsical idea that they should move in with the rest of the family. The episode closes with Barnabas challenging Jerimiah to a duel, with gloves and the whole bit.

Dark Shadows: Volume 5, Disc 2 - Episode 1

The countess confronts Vicky about her ability to predict the future. She incites a house-wide witch hunt, opening Vicky to grave danger. Vicky doesn’t help her case by hiding a family history dating into the 2oth century (oh, you just know this will turn up later) and hanging around with the “devil cat.”

Harsh witch hater Abagail gets a start when her brother Joshua turns from a cat back to his human form. To top off her night, she and the Countess search Vicky’s clothes, finding a bracelet with a devil charm. They send for Reverend Trask, the most enthusiastic witch hunter in television history.
